Research foundations of the COCM©
The Crescent of Care nursing model is grounded in research conducted in the Middle East; with King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center (Gen Org) – Jeddah (KFSH&RC-J) as the ‘home’ of the model.
Two research methodologies have contributed to the Crescent of Care model (COCM©).
The primary research (Lovering, 2008) was the study on Arab Muslim nurses’ experiences of the meaning of caring completed by Dr Sandy Lovering (2004 – 2008), completed as a doctoral research at the University of Sydney Australia.
An outcome to this research was a ‘picture’ or diagram representing the model used by Arab Muslim nurses in caring for Arab Muslim patients. However, this was only a diagram representing the nurses’ caring model. Further development and expansion was needed to transform this diagram into a nursing model to guide the care of Arab Muslim patients.
Collaborative inquiry methodology was used to develop the nursing model for application at the bedside at King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center (Gen Org) - Jeddah.
During this research, the patient care focused model became known as the “Crescent of Care” nursing model (COCM©). The COCM© is a practice based nursing model of relevance to culturally diverse nurses to guide the care of Arab Muslim patients.
The Collaborative Inquiry Project was completed by the Model Development Group 2010 – 2012.
